The South African government has initiated a nationwide project to train court interpreters in foreign languages ahead of the 2009 Confederations Cup and 2010 World Cup finals.

This is part of the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development's mass language training courses for the personnel in the judicial system as part of the preparations for the two competitions.

The Local Organising Committee is on record as saying that more than 500000 tourists are expected to visit South Africa for the World Cup.

This has prompted the department to embark on the training for its employees.

The department is training its interpreters in various languages like French, Spanish and Portuguese.

Ten court interpreters from various justice offices recently attended a six-week French language course at Kono Segole.
