The chief traffic officer in Mookgophong, Limpopo, faces possible prosecution after allegedly "hiding" a drunk driver in a garage toilet to avoid his being arrested after a fatal accident.

Traffic department sources say Arrie Opperman was reported to have hidden his friend, Andries Schoeman, in the toilets of a filling station after Schoeman allegedly drove over a pedestrian while drunk on Saturday night.

Opperman has told a disciplinary hearing that he "found" Schoeman in a local petrol station soon after the accident.

Lesiba William Molefe, 25, was trying to cross the road when he was hit and killed by the car allegedly driven by Schoeman.

Provincial police spokesman Mohale Ramatseba said yesterday police were investigating a case of homicide against Schoeman.
