Former Ekurhuleni executive mayor Duma Nkosi, pictured, who allegedly refused to renew an executive director's contract because she was "old", has appeared at an arbitration hearing.

Nkosi appeared in the Germiston Civic Centre yesterday after former executive director of health and social development Thobeka Thanga, 58, brought a claim of unfair labour practice.

Nkosi gave evidence on reasons for not renewing Thanga's contract in June last year

South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) spokesman Koena Ramotlou said: "Nkosi told the council Thanga's contract was not renewed because she is old and would stop working in the near future."

He said Nkosi's interference in an administrative issue made the decision not to renew the contract questionable.
