China to build 40km bridge

HONG KONG - Plans for a 40km bridge spanning the Pearl River estuary, which separates Hong Kong, Macau and Zhuhai in southern China, are closer to realisation after officials agreed to finance the link with government money.

HONG KONG - Plans for a 40km bridge spanning the Pearl River estuary, which separates Hong Kong, Macau and Zhuhai in southern China, are closer to realisation after officials agreed to finance the link with government money.

The decision to use public funds makes the start of construction work possible by 2010, Donald Tsang, the chief executive of Hong Kong's government, said yesterday.

The project will cost about R16 billion. - Sapa-dpa
