Siem still mum on NFD sponsorship

Kjetil Siem, the Premier Soccer League (PSL's) chief executive, is still reluctant to confirm the sponsor for the National First Division (NFD), though their programme is set to kick off in 23 days.

When contacted yesterday, Siem said: "I don't want to say anything about the issue of the sponsorship at the moment because we have not signed on the dotted line with the company we are negotiating with."

Siem nevertheless remains positive they will secure a sponsor for the NFD. The league ran without a sponsor and a knockout last season.

The NFD was recently hit by uncertainty caused by the imbalances in its two streams. But last Thursday the PSL's executive resolved the matter.

Free State teams African Warriors and Carara Kicks were drafted into the Coastal Stream to ensure that both streams have eight clubs each. The Inland Stream earlier had 10 clubs, while the Coastal Stream had six.

The imbalances came about after the relegation of inland teams Black Leopards and Jomo Cosmos from the Absa Premiership and the promotion of Maritzburg United and Bay United to the Premiership from the Coastal Stream.

Warriors and Kicks' officials yesterday stressed that the move to the Coastal Stream will not unduly affect their quest to compete for promotion to the top flight next season.

"We do not have any problem with the move to the coast and we are ready to compete with teams out there," Basil Mohalane, Kicks' general manager, said yesterday.

Mohalane's comments were echoed by Fees Moloi, his counterpart at Warriors.

"The only difference is that we will be playing closer to the shores but we will compete with any team.

"It will not be easy but I think we have the players who will be equal to the task," he said.
