After seven years of hardship the lives of three Limpopo orphans, who were left to fend for themselves after the death of their parents, have changed for the better.
This after the department of housing, in conjunction with media practitioners in Limpopo, donated a new house to the children.
The house was built and painted by officials of the department, members of the media and Rivoni Construction.
The three Rikhotso kids, Beatrice, 20, Aventina, 19, and Freeman, 16, were left to fend for themselves after the death of their parents in 2000 and 2006.
After the death of their parents the children lived in a dilapidated one-roomed mud shack in Humulani village, outside Giyani.
On rainy days and in cold weather they were forced to seek shelter with neighbours.
Most of the time they had to go for days on end without anything to eat.
Beatrice, who is in Grade 11, has looked after her siblings since their parents' death. The children could not register for an RDP house because of their age.
But on Sunday last week the children smiled for the first time since their parents' death.
"Our mandate is to give our people their dignity back, to build homes and communities and to house the nation," MEC for local government and housing Maite Nkoana-Mashabane said.
She said the government had built 2,6 million houses - more than 300000 of these in Limpopo.
"The houses we built can accommodate the total population of Swaziland, Lesotho and Botswana," Nkoana-Mashabane said.
She urged the Giyani municipality to adopt the kids and make sure that they are well taken care of.
Speaking on behalf of her siblings Beatrice said: "I now believe the proverb that 'good things come to those who wait'. Our dream of having a house of our own has finally been realised."
Mayor Angie Ramaepadi urged the children to look after the house and to study hard in order to realise their dream of a better life.
