Harmony High School continued their dominance of school competitions with a 5-4 victory over Dr Cingo High on Saturday.
They clinched the Free State provincial title of the Vodacom Under-16 Inter-school Challenge on a penalty shootout in Ladybrand.
The win has qualified them for the national championship to be held in Johannesburg from October 1 to 4.
The national champions will pocket R200 000 and will also represent the country at the Schools World Cup in Turkey from April 3 to 13.
The provincial crown was not won without a fight after Harmony were made to sweat to reach the final by the stubborn Louis Botha, who they pipped 3-2 in another penalty shootout in their semifinal clash.
Botha had earlier beaten Ntsu 2-1 during the preliminary round, while Dr Cingo walloped Relebohile Sibulele 4-2 on their way to the final.
Despite their triumph, Harmony mentor Pitso "Tsipas" Mokoena said he was not happy with their general display in the final.
"My players did not play as well as I would have loved them to but one is excited that we have qualified for the national tournament," Mokoena told Sowetan yesterday.
"This tourney has given me an insight on what to improve in the team and I can assure you that we are not going into the final event to add to the numbers."
KwaZulu-Natal will hold their provincial event at Princess Magogo Stadium in KwaMashu on August 9.
Northern Cape hold theirs at Galeshewe Stadium in Kimberley on August 16.
Limpopo will follow suit on August 23 at LwaMondo village in Thohoyandou.
The North West's tournament will be played at Ikageng Stadium in Potchefstroom on the same day, while Eastern Cape play theirs at Thandanani Stadium in Matatiele on August 30.
September 6 will be the date for Mpumalanga in Belfast and it will be Western Cape's turn on September 13 at Mosselbay, with Gauteng hosting their provincial tournament in Tshwane on September 20.
