The IFP Youth Brigade has condemned a call by the SA Students Congress to rename the Mangosuthu University of Technology in Umlazi.

Sasco made the call last week and "demanded an urgent renaming" of the institution, labeling IFP president Mangosuthu Buthelezi an "apartheid regime stooge".

"Mangosuthu Buthelezi is nothing but a former stooge of the apartheid regime. Students can't be misled into thinking that he is a hero who deserves to be honoured," the congress said.

Acting brigade chairman Pat Lebenya-Ntanzi condemned the congress' call yesterday.

"It has become very clear that the ANC and its affiliates are openly targeting the IFP with this entire renaming process," she said.

"The brigade agrees that in some instances name changes are necessary, but we are angered by the call to change the name of the university."
