At least five ATMs have been bombed in Mpumalanga over the past 10 days.

The latest bombings happened within an hour of each other at the weekend, at a Nedbank ATM in Bushbuckridge and a Standard Bank ATM in Mkhuhlu.

The Mkhuhlu incident happened at about 3am on Saturday, an hour after an ATM was bombed in Bushbuckridge.

Superintendent Abie Khoabane said yesterday a security guard at the Bushbuckridge shopping complex told police he saw a VW Golf parked a few metres from the machine.

"He became suspicious after noticing that the car's registration plates had been removed and that it had been parked at the spot for more than 20 minutes, which was unusual after midnight," Khoabane said.

"A few minutes later, the guard heard a gunshot. He ran away and called the police. Before the police arrived he heard a huge bang and saw the machine going down.

"When the police arrived there was cash strewn all over, but it is not clear if the thugs took any."

The incident happened about 100metres from an Absa ATM that was bombed more than a week ago.

At about the same time last weekend an FNB ATM was bombed at KaNyamazane, outside Nelspruit.

Less than 10 days ago a Standard Bank ATM was blown up in KaBokweni, near White River.

"No arrests were made in any of the ATM bombings, but we are hoping to arrest some suspects soon," said Khoabane.

He urged residents who might have information about the bombings to call the nearest police station.
