ANC just as corrupt as NP was, says UDM

The ANC is no different from its apartheid predecessors, the National Party, when it comes to corruption, says the United Democratic Movement's (UDM) Bantu Holomisa.

"When it comes to corruption the only small difference is that in instances like the info scandal the National Party forced the guilty ones to resign," Holomisa said yesterday.

The UDM leader was responding to allegations in the Sunday Times that President Thabo Mbeki received R30million from German industrial giant MAN Ferrostaal.

The alleged bribe was to ensure the company won the submarine contract in the government's multi-billion arms deal.

Mbeki is alleged to have given R28million to the ANC and R2million to his former deputy Jacob Zuma.

The Sunday Times report also claims that Mbeki was informed of the negative effect the cost of the arms deal would have on the South Africa economy. He apparently brushed these warnings aside.

Yesterday Mbeki's office denied the allegations.

"President Thabo Mbeki has never received any money from MAN Ferrostaal," a statement from the Presidency said.

It also called on anyone who had evidence that the president or anyone else received bribe(s) in the procurement process to approach the law enforcement agencies.
