The launch of the Tshwane high schools rugby programme got off to a good start at Atteridgeville rugby grounds at the weekend.

Eight schools from the townships around Tshwane - Mabopane, Soshanguve, Kgomotso, Tswaing, Atteridgeville, Mamelodi, Lotus Garden and Eersterus - took part in the maiden programme.

The tournament, which was funded by the Gauteng department of sport and recreation, featured Under-14s, Under-15s, Under-16s and Under-18s.

It is a project of the Blue Bulls development department whose intention is to create awareness of rugby at school level in the townships. Peter Makgobo, the union's coordinator of township rugby, said they were excited that the programme got off the ground.

"We are satisfied about the attendance of the participating schools but we still appeal to those who were not present to come on board.
