The National Teachers' Union (Natu) says it has received a positive response from parents of children at 10 schools in KwaZulu-Natal where it plans to distribute condoms.

The distribution is part of a pilot project to curb the spread of HIV.

Spokesman Allium Biyela said they were given the green light by school governing bodies (SGBs) and parents during consultations in the Ulundi region.

"We are overwhelmed by the decision to make condoms available to children who are sexually active," said Biyela.

He said most communities preferred realistic preventative measures to fight the Aids pandemic.

Earlier this year Natu announced plans to have condoms accessible to teachers and sexually active pupils.

The union began consultations with the 10 selected schools in the Ulundi region and 10 others in Mpumalanga.

The union has put in an order with the Department of Health to deliver the condoms as soon as possible.
