Hundreds of commuters were left stranded yesterday in the disputed route between Ndwedwe and Umzinyathi, north of Durban, as Masinqobe bus company discontinued its operations.

This comes after a passenger, Senzo Ngcobo, and a bus driver were killed when buses operating along the route were fired on and torched on Wednesday morning.

Ngcobo, 45, was on his way to work when gunmen in a BMW car opened fire on the bus full of passengers before setting it alight. He was shot in the back and burnt to death inside the bus.

In another bus attack, the driver was shot and died on the scene. Three other buses came under fire and were burnt by unknown gunmen.

Masinqobe director Ndabo Shangase said they did not send out their buses yesterday because they did not want to endanger their passengers.
