The death of socialite and astute football fundi Oliver "Clever" Mashego last week has saddended the community of Daveyton.

A very humble man, he has been described as the perfect example of honesty since he worked for David Brown in Benoni for almost 40 years.

After his wife died in 1978 he promised his family that he would never remarry but would channel his energy into raising his children. This endeared him to all.

Born in Pilgrim's Rest in 1940, Mashego gave his children made sure they got the best education possible.

A keen soccer player, he played for the popular team of the 60s, Zeph Mokholo's Smiling Buds, alias the "Maroon and Reds".

Mashego is survived by four children. The service starts at 8.30am at the Anglican Church in Phuti Street and will be buried at Pinkies Cemetery in Daveyton.
