After a lengthy break, the local soccer season kicks off this weekend with the Telkom Charity Cup tomorrow and SuperSport will bring subscribers all the action live.

Also live on the World of Champions this weekend is the third-place playoff and final of the Cosafa Senior Challenge from Bushbuckridge.

The popularity of Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns was reflected in the voting for the Charity Cup, with Platinum Stars making up the quartet who will do battle in the traditional season-opening tournament at the Mmabatho Stadium in Mafikeng tomorrow.

Sundowns, Chiefs and Pirates will be hoping for a better season than they experienced in 2007-08, when they finished fourth, sixth and eighth respectively behind eventual winners SuperSport United.

Downs (Nedbank Cup) and Chiefs (Telkom Knockout) both won trophies, but their league form was very disappointing.

On Saturday, Pirates face Platinum Stars in the first semifinal at 10am. That match will be followed by the much-anticipated Downs-Chiefs clash at noon, with the final scheduled for 4pm.

All three matches will be live on SuperSport 3.

On Sunday, defending champions South Africa take on Mozambique in the final of the Cosafa Senior Challenge at the Thulamahashe Stadium in Bushbuckridge at 3.30pm. That match will be preceded by the third-place playoff between Madagascar and Zambia at 1pm. Both matches will be live on SuperSport 3. - Sowetan
