Though alternative accommodation given to displaced immigrants left much to be desired, there was a genuine effort to ease the plight of the refugees. This, notwithstanding that some of the immigrants had made the humanitarian exercise unwieldy by biting the hand that feeds.

Of serious concern, though, is the plight of the more than 200 refugees who set up camp outside the Lindela detention centre in Krugersdorp since last week.

For the government now to say these refugees are no longer its responsibility is a disgrace.
