Fuse lit for exciting season

The South African Football Association (Safa) anticipates fireworks when the 2008-2009 Vodacom Promotional League programme kicks off in different provinces tomorrow.

The provinces that will mark the league's kickoff this weekend are Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Free State and Eastern Cape.

The league programme will run until February 21 next year.

"This early kickoff is necessitated by Safa's hosting of the Fifa Confederations Cup next year. We appeal to the teams to cooperate in this regard," Balebetse Monnakgotla, Safa's acting competitions director, told Sowetan yesterday.

At recent provincial pre-season meetings the league's teams had raised concerns about corruption among referees and the issue of the size of the travel allowance.

Other provinces will kick off their programme next weekend.

It is not known whether Limpopo side Winners Arsenal will honour their opening league match that is scheduled to take place against Mighty FC at Peter Mokaba Stadium tomorrow, because it is for sale.
