The development of a coordinated public transport system, particularly in Gauteng, has been met with major challenges.

The Gautrain and other projects such as the Taxi Recapitalisation Programme (TRP) and the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) or Re a Vaya, were meant to encourage more people to use a much more efficient and safer public transport.

The Gautrain is mainly aimed at commuters and existing motorists who travel on the congested roads between Pretoria and Johannesburg.

Park-and-ride facilities will be provided and a fleet of 125 dedicated buses will ferry commuters to various work destinations.

"There will also be a dedicated 15- minute link between OR Tambo and Sandton.

"Carriages for this purpose will feature fewer but wider and more luxurious seats and specialised areas for luggage storage near the doors."
