The taxi industry is still in the dark about how South Africa's first bus rapid transit (BRT) system will work, eight months before it becomes operational.

The BRT is a new type of bus system that will brig modern, frequent, low-cost and fast public transport to the cities that will host the 2010 Fifa World Cup.

The taxi industry expressed concern at a press briefing in Johannesburg yesterday about the Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transit.

The taxi industry, made up of the Top Six and Greater Johannesburg Regional Taxi Council, said though they were part of the negotiation process on BRT, they had no idea how it was going to work.

The first phase of the BRT system is expected to be operational by June 2009.
