The Soweto Rugby Club received a major boost when Laureus Sport for Good Foundation SA donated R300000 to them in Dobsonville on Saturday.
The money will be used by the club's schools project for the upliftment of players and coaches.
Former Springbok manager and SA Foundation chairman Morne du Plessis handed over a cheque to the club's chairman, Dali Ndebele, at Dobsonville rugby field.
Du Plessis told the kids that they would not go wrong if they adopted former president Nelson Mandela's belief that "sport has got the power to change the world".
"Success in life takes a lot of hard work and is never easy," he said.
An excited Ndebele said the money came in handy and would be utilised for their life skills programme for children in the sprawling township.
"Our aim is to make a difference in the community and such donations from Laureus will add momentum towards our efforts to give children in Soweto a better life."
Transport problems will be a thing of the past for the Soweto-based club after Nedbank donated a new 15-seater bus at the same function.
Hugo Porta, the legendary Argentine rugby player and fellow South African friends and ambassadors Deshun Deysel, Frankie Fredericks, Ernst van Dyk and John Moeti attended the function.
Thereafter, Soweto development sides and their white counterparts from Greenside, Pirates Rugby Club, played in a mini rugby festival.
