Irvin Khoza, top soccer leader, and prominent journalist Mathata Tsedu will be among the key speakers at a two-day conference to talk about the 2010 World Cup.
The conference, organised by the 2010 National Communication Partnership, will take place in Sandton tomorrow and Wednesday.
It will be attended by communicators, and public relations and marketing gurus. The focus is on improving the image of the continent ahead of the big soccer fiesta.
Participants are from various African countries and Germany, who hosted the 2006 World Cup finals.
Khoza is the chairman of the 2010 World Cup Local Organising Committee (LOC), while Tsedu is the editor-in-chief of City Press newspaper.
Khoza will talk about the "Unifying power of football". He will use the opportunity to urge participants to support the LOC in their quest to make this a truly successful African World Cup and help to promote it globally.
Still on the first day, Tsedu will deal with "The Role of Media in the context of 2010" in his speech.
Nikolaus Eberl of the Nation of Champions Initiative will talk about "How SA can learn from the German experience".
Moeketsi Mosola, acting chief executive officer of the International Marketing Council, will welcome the participants and give them a report on their preparations for the World Cup.
Essop Pahad, the Minister in the Presidency, also a board member of the LOC, will deliver the keynote address, with the topic being "What the 2010 event means for Africa".
On day two, speakers will include Themba Maseko, Tim Modise, Margaret Dingalo, Kenyan Peter Mutie and Nkwenkwe Nkomo.
Maseko is the chief executive of Government Communications, Modise (LOC communications director), Nkomo (2010 National Communication Partnership chairman), Mutie (Public Relations Society of Kenya chairman), Dingalo (Marketing and Advertising).
Other influential role players will include Professor Anton Harber, head of journalism at Wits University, Tiyani Rikhotso from the ANC communications and Senior Superintendent Vish Naidoo of the South African Police Service.
