Awards for sporting spirit

One out of four sporting codes is due to win the 2008 Jack Cheetham Memorial Award, which seeks to instil a winning, champion's spirit in young people.

The two top winners of the award are will be announced at a gala event in Johannesburg on October 14.

Nation-building partners of the award are Murray and Roberts, the SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee, and Sowetan and the Aggrey Klaaste Nation Building Foundation.

The award recognises the special qualities of former Murray and Roberts director Jack Cheetham, and encourages and supports sustainable development in sport. The groups that have been short-listed:

l Judo for the blind and visually impaired;

l Tiger Titans Cricket Club;

l Boccia in South Africa; and

lWelkom Wrestling Club, Free State.

Boccia is a sport designed for people with cerebral palsy and locomotor disabilities affecting motor skills.

It can be played by individuals, pairs or teams of three. Players throw red or blue balls as close as they can to a white one, which is thrown first.
