Buccaneers fan Simon "Bigsy" Mkhatshwa wanted badly to watch the European champions take on Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.
But he died before the Red Devils played their first match in this year's edition of the Vodacom Challenge.
His death has devastated his friends and family and robbed Pirates of a life-long supporter.
Born in Stetonville in Boksburg on July 17 1954, his family was forcibly moved to Vosloorus.
He loved Orlando Pirates so much that he rarely missed a game. If he was not at the grounds cheering, he was glued to the television set, watching his team's every move.
He was always gracious in defeat and consoled others who were in trouble.
He loved his Buccaneers uniform and never forgot his vuvuzela and team flag on match days, whether at home or away.
He preferred watching games at his home since he was also a shebeen king.
A jolly fellow who never raised his voice, Mkhatshwa went to Zimele Lower Primary before moving to Mthimkhulu Primary.
He finally went to Pungutsha High School in Katjibane village, near Rust de Winter just outside Hammanskraal, where he completed matric.
It is here that his leadership skills started to show when he was elected to the student representative council.
His first job was at Tycoon Industries, where he qualified as machine minder. He joined Vaal Metals and became a senior operator specialising in metal design.
At the time of his death he was a supervisor at Prestec Industry.
He is survived by his wife, four children, three grandchildren and a sister. Mkhatshwa will be buried tomorrow at Ekurhuleni East Cemetery in Boksburg.
The service at 1444 Tladi Street, in Wattville, starts at 10am.
