Great mathematician Arthur Maphikelela Mthembu died on Sunday after a short illness.

Bra Bhiza, or Meneer as he was affectionately known, was born on May 2 1938. He matriculated at Orlando High School.

He enrolled at Ongoye, now known as the University of Zululand, where he obtained an honours degree with distinction. He started teaching at Orlando High School under the leadership of TW Khambule.

He was later promoted to principal of the school and continued to teach maths - his favourite subject.

He taught at various schools, among them Progress High School and Vector College.

Though he had retired he continued giving private lessons at home.

He was later diagnosed with diabetes, which resulted in his going blind.

Mthembu will be buried tomorrow at West Park Cemetery. The service starts at 9am at the Orlando East Communal Hall.
