Irvin Khoza, Orlando Pirates' boss and the Premiership chairman, has made a proposal to SuperSport International and director of football Stan Matthews to start a national Under-19 league in the near future.

Khoza was speaking at the launch of the yearly SuperSport Under-19 tournament in Randburg yesterday.

This fourth edition of this prestigious tournament will take place at Safa Development Centre in Klipspruit, Soweto from August 7 to 10.

Said Khoza, who is also the tournament patron: "It is crucial to form a national league that will perhaps be a feeder for professional teams."

Most development coaches supported Khoza's idea because they believe it will bring better quality players together.

The tournament has already helped unearth more than 30 players including Teko Modise (Orlando Pirates) and Thuso Phala (Kaizer Chiefs).

The 20 participating teams were divided into groups of five.

Group A: Maritzburg United, Transnet School of Excellence, Platinum Stars, Afri Sports and Soweto Select.

Group B: AmaZulu, Bidvest Wits, Bay United, Ajax Cape Town and Van Gils Academy.

Group C: De Beers, Kaizer Chiefs, SuperSport United, Orlando Pirates and Santos.

Group D: Gateway, Mamelodi Sundowns, Thanda Royal Zulu, Bloemfontein Celtic and Moroka Swallows.

Draw - August 7: Maritzburg United v School of Excellence; AmaZulu v Wits; De Beers v Chiefs; Gateway v Sundowns; Transnet v Stars; Wits v Bay United; Chiefs v SuperSport; Sundowns v Royals.
