Platinum Stars' communications director Putco Mafani yesterday vowed that they will cause a major upset by making a quantum leap to fourth position on the Telkom Charity Cup vote chart.

He said this after the final public viewing of the Charity Cup votes on Wednesday, ahead of the deadline for voting for this spectacular tournament today at midnight.

By Wednesday The Tycoons were sixth on the chart with with 40996 votes, but an optimistic Mafani is adamant they will be one of the four competing teams.

The tournament will be played for the second year running at Mmabatho Stadium in Mafikeng on August 2.

"We started late, only last week, to mobilise our supporters, but we're determined to leapfrog [other teams] to fourth place in this event," said Mafani.

"We've been holding meetings and urging the entire people of the North West province to stand behind the team, because it will be embarrassing if Stars are not part of this event.

"People are going to be surprised to see us squeezing through because every household in the province is aware that it is important for us to take part, even school children as well as hawkers want to see Stars playing in this event," said Mafani.

Charity Trust chairman Leepile "LM" Taunyane said they were hoping this year's event will raise more funds than last season.

"We are using this tournament as a dry-run for the Confederations Cup next year and the 2010 World Cup to check on our readiness as a province and as a country for those two tournaments," North West Premier Edna Molewa said. "We're expecting this one-day event to be fun-filled."

The final results will be a mystery even to the media, who will not have access to updates until the announcement is made at the press conference on Monday.

By Wednesday Mamelodi Sundowns were leading with 54102 votes, Bloemfontein Celtic leapt from the fifth to second with 52365, followed by Orlando Pirates with 48405, Kaizer Chiefs with 48083 and AmaZulu with 45560 votes.
