Police yesterday confirmed that a colleague who works as a bodyguard for the speaker of the provincial legislature, Willies Mchunu, is facing drunk driving charges.
Mandla Yeni was arrested on Saturday while driving a state vehicle, allegedly under the influence of liquor.
Police said when Durban Metro police caught up with Yeni at the Snell Parade a "strong smell of liquor" greeted them.
He was tested and their suspicions were confirmed.
"The test was positive and the blood alcohol level was over the legal limit," said police s[pokesman Muzi Mngomezulu.
"Police then took him to Durban central police station where he was locked up," he added.
