It was interesting to hear the responses of some high-ranking members of the ANC to recent reports of waning support for the movement. They were almost predictable.

It has always been my worry that the ANC is resting on its laurels and assuming that people will always vote for the party irrespective of what happens.

Instead of trying to remedy the situation by finding solutions to the issues that make voters unhappy, some ANC members are busy disputing the findings.

Some statements by ANC members are frightening indeed. If people feel that some of the recent statements look like precursors to future dictatorship, they have a right to be uneasy.

What the ANC should be doing is to assure people that everything is in order. Threatening people and opposition parties won't help, because as much as we don't like South Africa's opposition parties, they play an important role in the country's political landscape.

Whatever happened to "high moral, high discipline". As confused as our opposition parties are, the ANC still needs to respect the people who put them in power.

If we we get disillusioned and boycott elections, the consequences could be just as bad as voting for the opposition.
