ATHLETES URGED TO SADDLE UP FOR CHALLENGE

The organisers of the Vodacom Tour de Soweto Cycle Challenge have urged athletes throughout the country to take part in the yearly event in Dobsonville on August 17.

The organisers of the Vodacom Tour de Soweto Cycle Challenge have urged athletes throughout the country to take part in the yearly event in Dobsonville on August 17.

Speaking to Sowetan yesterday, public relations officer Susan Kie said they will be hosting the race for recreational and professional cyclists.

She said the event was a great success last year and attracted more than 1700 athletes, including top cyclists and teams from all over Gauteng.

"We hope to double the number in this year's tournament. Therefore, we are making an appeal to those interested to register in time," said Kie.

Tomorrow is the closing date for registration.

The aim of the Challenge is to promote cycling as a sport in the townships and to change the perception of cycling as an elitist activity.
