School principal Oupa Bodibe might be the headmaster of his school, but 17 of his staff have threatened to quit if a relative of his becomes deputy.
The teachers of Isisisosethu Secondary School at Siyathemba in Balfour, have given the provincial MEC for education Mmathu- lare Coleman until month end to respond to their demand that Nthabeleng Mokoena should not be appointed to the post.
The disgruntled staff say Bodibe has appointed Mokoena, a family friend, to be his deputy ahead of several more qualified candidates who had also applied.
The teachers claim that the post was tailor-made for Mokoena, long before it was advertised.
"Her name was mentioned at some of the meetings attended by the principal and some staff members," said one teacher.
Sources at the school said a number of their colleagues, including a former acting deputy, had also applied for the post but none of them were short-listed.
Only three males and two females were short-listed though the post was meant for a female appointee.
The sources said the other female teacher was ignored because it was claimed she was an outsider and the post was meant for someone within the school staff.
When approached by Sowetan yesterday the principal refused to comment and referred enquiries to the provincial education department.
Education department spokesman Jasper Zwane said he was not aware of the list and that he would check with the office of the MEC about it.
The chairman of the school governing body, Twana Nhlapo, said he would comment only after "our SGB meeting and a parents' meeting on Sunday".
