The Inkatha Freedom Party said yesterday that 100 members of the ANC from the powerful eThekwini district have joined its ranks.

The announcement comes after the IFP won eight out of nine by-elections in KwaZulu-Natal.

IFP district chairman in the eThekwini district Mdu Nkosi said the new members come from the uMzinyathi area, north of Durban.

"The 100 people who have ditched the ANC for the IFP provide irrefutable evidence of the inroads that the IFP is making into ANC territory," Nkosi said.

But eThekwini region ANC chairman John Mchunu denied the claims and said the party had not lost a single member.
