Thousands of bus commuters will be stranded in Johannesburg today when drivers join Cosatu's strike against the rising cost of living.

Johannesburg municipality only heard late yesterday that Cosatu-affiliated bus drivers were joining the protest.

thuis means that the five hundred buses that are used daily by close to 90 000 communters are likely to be grounded as 480 drivers are expected to join the Cosatu march in the city centre.

Spokesman Gabu Tugwana said: "We expect major disruptions because of the bus drivers who have joined the strike.

"We were caught off guard since they only informed us late (yesterday) that they would be joining the strike," he said.

Tugwana said the municipality also apologised to people whose refuse should be collected today. He said it would only be collected next Wednesday because of the strike.
