Residents take plight to ANC

Residents of Alexandra in Johannesburg, unhappy at the way the government has dealt with their right to property, will now take their plight to the ANC.

Residents of Alexandra in Johannesburg, unhappy at the way the government has dealt with their right to property, will now take their plight to the ANC.

They were to deliver a letter to ANC general secretary Gwede Mantashe yesterday, outlining the history of their claims and their concerns, said spokesman Richard Mbalukwana.

"During 2000 and 2002 we were promised property titles for more than 1500 displaced people," he said.

"Not a single affected person has ownership of property yet. Some can produce title deeds of their parents and grandparents dating as far back as 1912."

Residents hoped that "just like our suburban white neighbours, we own the properties that are rightfully ours". - Sapa
