Wayland, 41, had run the Comrades Marathon in 8hrs:12min last month and has three Golden Reef 100-mile wins to her credit. The field of 45 had left Port Alfred at 5pm Friday night and by the quarter way at the Fish River Wayland had shown her intentions, lying third at that stage.
She took the lead at about the 120km mark, and ran strongly, particularly over the last 30km, to win in handsome style in 16:19:52.
She is the first woman athlete to break the tape in the history of the race, first run in 1977.
Three-time winner John Magagane of Rand Road Warriors was second in 17:05:09, while Mogale Piliso of SANDF was third in 17:29:34. Last year Piliso had finished second and Magagane third.
David Duffey of the host club, Buffaloes Road Runners, was fourth in 18:49:34. - Sapa
