The Inkatha Freedom Party-led Zululand district municipality yesterday lashed out at local National Democratic Convection (Nadeco) chairman Tutu Buthelezi for accusing the district of poor service delivery.

Buthelezi, son of IFP leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi, said they were concerned about the "failure of the district to improve the lives of impoverished communities".

Zululand district mayor Zanele Magwaza-Msibi said they accepted that as elections approached "political chancers" such as Buthelezi would come with "stories to gain people's attention".

To secure votes in the next election, political analysts and observers believe, Nadeco will support the ANC, especially in the rural areas, while the Democratic Alliance and IFP will work hand in hand to take power away from the ANC in such areas.
