A hitch-hiker was shot and seriously wounded and another managed to escape after they were attacked by the occupants of a car during an attempted robbery.

The victims were attacked by the occupants of a hijacked vehicle, the occupants of which had offered them a lift outside Giyani in Limpopo at the weekend.

The two victims were on their way from Gauteng at about 10pm when they were given a lift by the driver of a four-wheel, double-cab bakkie.

The driver was with another man in the car.

Police spokesman Superintendent Moatshe Ngoepe said the incident allegedly happened on the road between Dzumeri and Giyani at the turn-off to Mphakane village.

"The suspects stopped the vehicle, got out and acted as if they wanted to stretch their legs," Ngoepe said. "The victims also got out of the car but were confronted by the suspects who started searching them.

"The victims ran away and the suspects started firing shots at the men.

"One of the men was hit by a bullet and is seriously wounded."
