After a series of accidents that claimed the lives of three people near a taxi rank at Burgersfort in Sekhukhuni, the Greater Tubatse municipality has set aside R14million to deal with the problem in the town.
The money will be used to build an overhead bridge near the always congestedtaxi rank that caters for about 12000 people of the area's population.
Director of technical services in Tubatse municipality, Bruce Mohlaba, said three people were knocked down and killed by speeding vehicles in the town , while an average of five pedestrians were involved in accidents daily, and even more at weekends.
Mohlaba said the rate of accidents involving pedestrians was alarming and had an influence on the construction of the overhead bridge.
"The bridge, which is under construction, is being built between Dirk Winterbarc and Mpumula streets - which are used by pedestrians to and from the CBD in Cassel Square for shopping.
Municipal manager Simon Malepeng said yesterday that the "construction of the bridge would not only help reduce the rate of pedestrian deaths and accidents at the rank, but also help the local unemployed with jobs".
Malepeng said the project has already provided 150 construction jobs to unemployed locals.
Phelia Temo, one of the residents hit by a car during the Christmas holidays last year, said the overhead bridge was a huge relief to pedestrians.
He applauded the work done by the municipality and said it was thoughtful of the council to build the bridge.
