Birthday celebrations have been lined up across the country for former president Nelson Mandela, who turns 90 today.

The Nobel Peace laureate will spend his big day at his home in the Eastern Cape village of Qunu.

His grandson, Chief Mandla Mandela, will lead a symbolic 35km "Long walk to freedom" from Mvezo to Qunu.

As a gesture of goodwill the provincial department of agriculture will hand over 150 goats to poor communities.

A chicken franchise will give a free meal to all those celebrating their birthday today. People are required to bring their identity documents as proof.

Education minister Naledi Pandor officially opened the Making the Legacy exhibition in Pretoria yesterday. The exhibition comprises eight comic books that tell the stories of Madiba's life, values and work.

Tshwane municipality will have a weekend full of activities for young and old, including performances by veteran musicians.

The Delmas municipality will hand out food parcels to residents in celebration of Mandela's dedication to fighting hunger.

Birthday celebrations for Madiba started last month when Hyde Park in London rolled out the red carpet for the world's most loved elder statesman with a rocking 46664 concert.

The Nelson Mandela Foundation has announced it will launch a 240-page coffee-table book commemorating the first post-apartheid president's contribution to history.
