Echoes of the latest controversial buzzword, kill, have hit Kokstad.
Kokstad mayor Mbulelo Sithole created a storm at Bhongweni township yesterday when he threatened to "kill" if apartheid was to return.
However, unlike his ANC comrades, Youth League president Julius Malema and Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi, who were not specific about who they would kill, Sithole threatened to kill himself.
While some people expressed concern about Sithole's statements, it was unlikely that the matter would be taken to the South African Human Rights Commission.
Sithole made this controversial statement when addressing people at Bhongweni during a commemoration for youth leader and activist, Nkululeko Thuntu- lwana, organised by his municipality.
The audience was stunned by the mayor's words.
He said: "I will kill if apartheid was to return. I will kill myself."
"It is now 18 years since Nkululeko Thuntulwana, the young and selfless revolutionary, passed away.
"I know that for some, this has long been forgotten, but for us, we can still sense the smell of the teargas as if it was yesterday."
Sithole urged the youth to carry on with what Thuntulwana had started.
