The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) said yesterday it was willing to help investigate claims that an employee was fired from an IFP-led municipality because he was a card-carrying member of the ANC.

"It is a violation of the Constitution and the Equality Act if someone loses a job because of political affiliation," said Jody Kollapen, the commission's chairman.

Dumbe municipality community officer Siboniso Xaba, 27, said he was fired after his bosses allegedly discovered that he was a card-carrying member of the ANC.

Dumbe municipality manager Thabo Putini has refuted the allegations.

"This man was fired for being absent from work for a week without permission. He also pleaded guilty at the disciplinary hearing for submitting a fake sick note," he said.
