From the 1952 Defiance Campaign to the first commander of our glorious army, Umkhonto weSizwe, Mandela has led by example.
He ensured that the ranks of MK were swelled by highly disciplined cadres. Mandela and the entire leadership of our movement never glorified arms and killing when it was justifiable for them to do so.
Even after 1994, when black-on-black violence threatened to tear the country apart, Madiba came to Durban and told members of the ANC and the IFP to throw their weapons into the sea.
How then should we honour Madiba, this leader of leaders? This giant of giants? We must honour Madiba by always telling the truth to our people who trust the ANC as their liberator. In the ANC we are supposed to "tell no lies and claim no easy victories".
We must convey a truthful message that says, that as leaders and members alike, we will fight corruption. We must tell the truth that we will respect the rule of law even under difficult circumstances.
As the ANC, we shall respect the independence of the judiciary. The truth is, we are all equal before the law.
The ANC Youth League and its leader Julius Malema must therefore lead campaigns to save lives by promoting a gun-free society, a generation free of HIV-Aids and a taxi industry free of hit squads.
To honour Madiba, we must not glorify arms and killing because Madiba did not. For Madiba, let us all fight corruption, bribery, poverty, racism and xenophobia. Even 90 years from now, people will sing great songs praising Madiba.
