The KwaZulu-Natal department of health revealed yesterday that an initial probe at Umlazi's Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital into allegations of selling anti-retroviral drugs to teenage addicts to mix with dagga show that the staff are in the "clear".
Health officials said yesterday it was becoming clear that those who were the "legitimate recipients of ARVs" were selling the drugs and not the staff.
They warned, however, that should the final stages of the probe, which is looking into the stock control of the medication, show any discrepancies, then those responsible would be investigated by the police.
A week ago residents of Umlazi, south of Durban, alleged that staff at the hospital with access to the institution's pharmacy were selling the Stocrine ARV cocktail to the teenagers.
Provincial spokesman for the department of health, Leon Mbangwa, said their internal probe had so far revealed that "there are no indications that link staff to the distribution".
