Mama Angel wielded her weekly magic at the Zanele Mtshali Children's Home and delivered R5000 worth of adult nappies.
The home in Khutsong, Carletonville, cares for disabled residents aged three to 24 years old. It was founded by Mathew Chavana in May 1997. A physiotherapist at the local clinic, he found out that many disabled children were neglected.
"Children were hidden away from the public. They would not be brought to the clinic. Many of them were neglected and received no training or stimulation," Chavana said.
He opened a creche and day centre for the children, which he was forced to convert into a 24- hour home when he found an abandoned orphan.
The home is named after Zanele Mtshali who is now 14 years old. It is the only home the child has known.
The home is registered and has a charity (NPO) number. It does not receive funding from the government because of the uncertainty over the status of Khutsong.
Solly Baard, the administrator of the home, said: "The social worker who was helping us has died and now we have to start afresh.
"We charge parents R500 a month, but only half of them pay, and irregularly. We depend on handouts from supermarkets and churches in the area.
"The International Order of True Templars and the Methodist Youth have been a great help," he said.
"We have 28 children who are cared for by 23 staff members. We are all volunteers and do not receive salaries," said Baard.
The home is run by a board, which includes a parent.
"We have included a parent on the board so that parents of the children have a voice on how we run the home," Baard said.
