ANC sending clear message to members

The sacking of premiers Nosimo Balindlela and Ebrahim Rasool is the beginning of a new culture of accountability in South African politics.

The sacking of premiers Nosimo Balindlela and Ebrahim Rasool is the beginning of a new culture of accountability in South African politics.

Addressing the media after the NEC meeting ANC general secretary Gwede Mantashe clearly indicated that any decision about any premier or MEC will be based on poor performance.

The NEC is taking accountability and service delivery very seriously. The culture of non-accountability was as a result of political patronage.

It did not matter how incompetent one was. As long as the head was pleased one's job was guaranteed. Service delivery and respect for citizens did not matter.

In Eastern Cape and Western Cape many service delivery problems were reported many times, but little or nothing was done.

Several national departments are also not doing well but ministers get away with it. The situation is so bad that some hospitals are not operational.

Polokwane taught us that power is about respecting the will of the people. If you undermine the people they can simply remove you.

The country needs this culture of accountability if services are to be delivered.

The ANC is beginning to flex its muscles and is sending a clear message to its members that incompetence, corruption and patronage will not be tolerated.
