The second edition of Soweto's unique and exciting cycling challenge will be taking place on Sunday, August 17.

And, as with everything else that happens in and around this most talked about township in the world, the Tour de Soweto Cycling Challenge will see local streets come alive with entertainment and racing action in true African renaissance style.

In the townships cycling is known for its delivery-style dikwiel bikes as a means of transportation.

Tour de Soweto promotes cycling as a sport thus breaking the perception that cycling is an elitist activity.

In keeping with this, the race features the colourful dikwiel cycling race, schools cycling challenges and the amazing decorated dikwiel competition.

This year's start and finish is at the Dobsonville mall.

The route travels along the Soweto highway and past suburbs such as Dobsonville, Meadowlands, Orlando (past the impressive new Orlando Stadium) and new low-cost housing developments such as Pennyville and Braamfischer.- Sapa
