Madisha to know his sadtu fate today

Axed Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) president Willie Madisha goes before an SA Democratic Teachers Union disciplinary committee today, which is expected to confirm his sacking as president of the teachers union.

Axed Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) president Willie Madisha goes before an SA Democratic Teachers Union disciplinary committee today, which is expected to confirm his sacking as president of the teachers union.

The hearing, behind closed doors, is to be chaired by one of Madisha's most outspoken opponents, Sadtu deputy president Thobile Ntola.

Ntola and Sadtu general secretary Thulas Nxesi were the prime movers behind the suspension in December of Madisha as president of Cosatu.

This followed Madisha's reluctance to support Jacob Zuma as president of the ANC and his public statements about an alleged R500000 donation to the SA Communist Party.

"With one of his main antagonists in the chair and being held behind closed doors, this can hardly be said to be fair or impartial," said his lawyer Julian Meltz, who described the hearing as "a perversion of natural justice".

Meltz is also assisting Madisha in taking a case of harassment and unfair discrimination against Sadtu, Cosatu and the SACP to the Equality Court.

The initial suspension of Madisha was apparently unconstitutional, having been decided by the executive committee at an inquorate meeting.

He was accused of publicly stating that he had given a R500000 cash donation from controversial businessman Charles Modise to SACP general secretary Blade Nzimande.

Nzimande denies having received the money and Madisha, a former politburo member of the SACP, was expelled from the party. - Sapa
