A police officer was among hijackers who allegedly robbed a KwaDukuza man and bundled him into the boot of his vehicle early yesterday morning.

The victim said he thought his life was at an end but, thanks to the efforts of local police patrolling the area, he was saved.

Police on patrol noticed the men behaving suspiciously and decided to pull over the vehicle and inspect it.

Police spokesman Muzi Mngomezulu said: "Officers suspected that there was something fishy about the VW Golf and a maroon Nissan in front of them.

"They came under gunfire from both vehicles. The police officers returned fire but three of the assailants escaped and one was arrested."

Mngomezulu said while checking the vehicles police heard a noise coming from the boot of one of them.

When they opened the boot they found the owner of the hijacked car, who then explained to the police what had happened.

"It was later established that the arrested man was a police constable from New Ark police station," said Mngomezulu.

He said the 25-year-old police officer was expected to appear in the KwaDukuza magistrate's court on charges of attempted murder, armed robbery, car hijacking and kidnapping.

Mngomezulu praised the excellent work done by the KwaDukuza police and emphasised that the South African Police Service would not tolerate corrupt officers.

"There is no room for corrupt members of the police in this province," said Mngomezulu.

He said police were investigating whether the suspect and his accomplices were responsible for other similar attacks in the area.
