Makhitha Yellow Birds and their supporters were on cloud nine after clinching the R10000 first prize of the inaugural Vhembe District Mayoral Soccer Tournament at Tshifulanani Stadium at the weekend.

The tournament turned the small village of Tshifulanani near Thohoyandou into an entertainment arena with Tshikona and Malende traditional dancers along with local DJs spinning vynil throughout the day.

The good turnout has prompted the municipality to make a declaration of turning the tourney into a bigger event next year.

"We have resolved to rope in two Absa Premiership teams next season with our own local teams. This first edition of the mayor's tournament was a clear indication that people are thirsty for soccer and entertainment in general," Ndivhuwo Mamathupa, Vhembe district municipal manager, said.

Yellow Birds beat arch-rivals Khumbe Poultry Farms 4-3 through penalties.

The two sides were level 1-1 after regulation time and failed to break the deadlock in extra-time.
