Six men who allegedly shot and killed a police officer in 2006 briefly appeared in the Johannesburg high court yesterday after a spat about witnesses.

Mondli Zulu, Moses Sehloro, Thabo Mmotha, Joseph Mohlambe, Amereo Fernanso and Morris Machaba appeared before Judge Matshego Ramagaga.

They allegedly shot and killed Lesley Mashaba of the serious and violent crime unit in Kliptown, Soweto.

The judge postponed the case after Zulu's new representative, Advocate Christopher Pillay, asked for witnesses to be recalled so he could question them again. Zulu had fired his previous advocate because he felt he was not being well represented.

Mashaba and Captain Simon Matladi had tried to arrest two armed robbers at a shack in Kliptown at 3am when the fatal gun battle erupted.
