In terms of the government's Batho Pele initiative, ensuring accessibility of services by improving efficiency and accountability is sacrosanct.

Anything to the contrary negates its mandate.

The Department of Justice is an automatic signatory to this pledge and in its mission statement it promises to provide a friendly, efficient and professional service.

But, destitute women have to wait for hours and days in long queues at the Johannesburg family court to get their monthly maintenance payouts. The delays have been attributed to a new electronic system.

Surely the authorities should have anticipated such logistical hiccups and devised temporary mechanisms to ease the women's plight.
